Elite. What is elite? In today's sports its getting a watered down definition that I do not approve of. Sit back and ponder to yourselves what it means to reach ELITE status. How are we grading elite? Elite by definition is a person, group, or class considered to be the best in a particular society especially because of their talent, power, or wealth.
When I think of elite, such players come to mind like MJ , Magic, and Larry Bird. More recent inclusions for me are Tony Parker, Kobe, and LeBron James. There is a systematic devaluation of the term and what is required to reach elite status. Mostly this is contributed to fan bases as to who or what dictates elite status. I do not subscribe to this train of thought. As I was reminded, playoffs are where legends are made. Not in the regular season.
Greatness can be conceived in the regular season but elite status to me starts and ends with the hoisting of the revered Larry O'Brien trophy. Now does that mean a player like Tyson Chandler is elite...don't be silly. But in the case of players like Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, or Steph Curry. Its the only thing missing on a good/great resume. You can pad stats in the regular season and make all the ALL STAR games you can handle. But, in my opinion as a sports fan. I hold a higher bar. Elite status is held for game changers, winners, CHAMPIONS. Until that trophy or those rings adorn your mantle or fingers, leave ELITE out! You're just better than most. In today's sports, that may just be good enough. But its not ELITE enough for me.
