Fresh off a disappointing loss from Atlanta last night giving up a 17 point lead. The Mavs are back at home tonight vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves. T'Wolves looking to recover from a shootout loss to the Nuggets 117-110. Mavs took a different approach tonight and attacked the basket a lot this game. The T’Wolves decided to keep their normal game plan every night by staying aggressive at the 3 point line and the perimeter. Minnesota led 54-47 at the half. With the T’Wolves shooting 47%FG/42%3PT/71% FT and the Mavs 44%FG/22%3PT/60%FT
2nd half the Mavs were more aggressive and picked it up on the defensive end and used the fast break as the advantage. The Mavs re took the lead 66-64. Their first time leading in the game since the first quarter. But the T’Wolves regained the lead and kept it going with more 3pt FGs and great shooting mid-range. They were up by as many as 11 with 3:12 left in the 4th. Mavs defense vastly improved getting steals and easy lay-ups. But they just couldn’t contain Minnesota's hot shooting from the 3-point line. After a Kevin Love 3-pointer with 1:55 left in the game. It pretty much sealed the deal for the T'Wolves as they get the win with the final score, 112-106. Improving to 9-9 on the season.
Kevin Martin led the way with 27pts shooting 7-14FG and 3-6 from 3PT. Nikola Pekovic had 21pts and 9 rebounds, shooting an incredible 10-13 FGs. Kevin Love had 21pts and 11rebs. T’Wolves shot 50% from the field this game and 42% from 3. Hitting 11 three pointers. Kevin Love postgame says that this win is “Very important to us. Especially with the tough schedule that we've had. We just have to fight through it and keep it going.” Also, the T’Wolves had only 8 players suit up for tonight’s game. They had 5 players that did not play due to coach’s decision.
The Mavs were led by Monta Ellis with 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Dirk had 23 points, with most of his points coming in the 2nd half of the game. Also explains his frustration postgame. “We have to get better and hit close shots down the stretch. This was a big game for us. Especially after the one that we dropped vs. Atlanta. Defensively, we were not good enough. We cut the lead down to 4 or 5. Then someone will come down and hit a big basket.”
The Mavs kept it pretty even with team stats with Minnesota. Leading the way in assists(25-21), steals(7-3), fast break points(16-12) and less turnovers(9-12) But shot a terrible 29%(7-24) from 3 and only 11 FTs compared to the T’Wolves 30FTs. They have been having a lot of problems with defense down the stretch. Shawn Marion explains his frustration post game: “It seems like sometimes we can’t put together good four or five stops in a row and that’s what we need. We need some chain stops instead of just one good one. We just got to stay with it and help each other.” Mavs rookie point guards Gal Mekel. Who filled in for Jose Calderon because of an ankle injury. Had 6 points and 7assists off 3-12FG.
Mavs have dropped 2 straight games and record is now 10-8. Mavs have played 8 games out 13 days so far. They will get some rest and get ready for their next game on Tuesday vs. the Charlotte Bobcats at home.
